REVIEWS

“What starts off with the feeling of a dark comedy and then weaves back and forth as a frank dissection’s of drug culture, Ben Rummans Film Resonates with the complex TOPIC OF ADDICTION. The Writing is particularly strong and the actors pull off the story and topic with an in-your-face attitude. The camera work is well done and the shot/scenes are varied to fit with the tone and credibility of the topic. The sequence of the narrator describing what it's like to be addicted is a solid example of this. The screenwriting is direct and concise and the candor in the narration is very well done with out being preachy. Additionally the use of cramped expressionistic spaces really gives the film an edgy quality that fits the story and it's message.

To gain even the slightest understanding of what it feels like to be an addict, it makes sense that the addiction is described by an addict themselves. The cycle of feeling what relief is provided by, in this case, heroin, while returning time and time again to addiction sickness, characterized as “flossing with razor blades” is quite an effective comparison. There is simultaneously the existence of unreliable narrators. When they blame society for making them criminals, we cannot be sure that this is indeed a fully true statement. Certainly, the war on drugs contributed to demonizing narcotics, perhaps to a ridiculous extreme, but does that really excuse anyone from theft? Regardless, the film elicits both sympathy and contempt, while providing food for thought on this the topic of drug abuse, and maybe that is what matters most.
